Aloe vera and A. barbadensis are commonly known as Medicinal Aloe and Barbados Aloe. These clustering succulents form rosettes of fleshy, upright, gray-green leaves and bear tall clusters of tubular flowers in yellow. They are often used medicinally both internally and externally to treat burns, bites, and inflammation.

They thrive in USDA zones 9-11 and Sunset zones 8, 9, 12-24, H1, H2, and reach a mature size of 2 feet high and wide. They prefer partial shade or full sun in cooler climates and need little to moderate water.

When planting aloe vera outdoors, it is best to use sandy or gravelly soil and to plant it with other succulents with similar needs. For a border planting, pot it separately and use it as a focal point, and raise the pot to eye level to make it more prominent. Potted aloe grows well on decks and patios where it is handy for emergency burns and bites.

Aloe Vera needs to be placed in a bright area with indirect sunlight, as direct sun can burn its tender skin. The soil needs to be well-draining, and a special cactus potting soil or mix of perlite or coarse sand can be used to ensure good drainage. Aloe can handle drought well but prefers to be watered regularly, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. During the rainy season, no supplemental water should be given to the plants. Most aloes go dormant in the winter and won't require any water at all, provided they received sufficient water during the growing season. If your climate is rainy during the winter, consider planting your aloe in gravel or stones to allow the water to run off.
